Appearance
Linnet is short and slender, with a delicate frame, fair skin, pale blond hair, and blue eyes. Her most prominent features are the two pure white bird wings that sprout from her back. Her wingspan is longer than she is tall, and she is capable of flight. She tends to wear loose fitting dresses with an open back or thin straps to accommodate her wings. She favors light pastel colors, neutral tones or gray, when not wearing white.Background
[CW: slavery/non-con body modifications]Linnet was orphaned at a young age. She spent the majority of her early life in a city-run orphanage. At the age of 16, because of her fair complexion, she was selected by a black market dealer to undergo genetic modification that turned her into a Domesticated Companion of the avian variety--essentially, they modified her in order to give her wings.
In this universe, Domesticated Companions are human/animal hybrids created in a lab either to the specification of a buyer or for mass market. They are sold as pets/companions to the wealthy elite of this society. Avian Companions are the most valued due to the high failure rate in creating them. Often, the thinner bone density required to make flight possible results in fatal genetic mutations. This is why a black market has sprung up using homeless or abandoned children and teens as a base and modifying their genetics in order to produce a more stable product. The practice is highly illegal and any Companion of this origin that is found-out will be immediately euthanized and the owner/creators jailed.
Linnet managed to survive the modification and, after 3 years of intense physical therapy, training, and behavior modification therapy, she was deemed a success and sold to a high-paying technology entrepreneur named Damien Kline. Most Companions are seen as accessories to dote on and show off (there are even pet shows and special salon/retail stores that cater specifically to Companions) but Damien has seemingly no interest in displaying her as a status symbol or showing her off. He built a room just for her in his industrial mansion and leaves her to her own devices the majority of the time.
Most Companions are created with an altered set of vocal cords that render them mute, so Linnet was taught to never speak by having a voice box inhibitor installed in her throat to make talking physically impossible while it's activated. But Damien leaves the inhibitor off when she is at home alone with him and even encourages her to speak. He's been slowly teaching her to read in the evenings after his work. She finds his treatment of her confusing because his demeanor is so cold and detached, yet he treats her with more dignity and kindness than anyone else she's ever known. Her feelings around being a Companion were complicated already, but this makes it impossible for her to understand what her place in the world is really supposed to be.
Demeanor & Attitude
Linnet is timid and meek at first meeting. She's been trained to act subservient and to stay silent. However, her body language and facial movements are expressive and vibrant, belying the fact that she used to be a very outgoing and extroverted person. When she starts to feel comfortable enough around people, she can become very expressive again--though, it will take a lot of trust for her to work up the nerve to speak. She's also got a surprisingly hot tempter, but her training has taught her she must suppress it at all cost, usually, by going quiet and still or by simply pouting in protest.Voice
She is functionally mute (especially while the voice inhibitor is active) but she is capable of speech when she feels safe enough. Her voice is surprisingly deep and she has good command of sarcasm in tone. She does not know or use sign language and she has only an elementary knowledge of reading and writing, so she is mostly limited to body language and universal hand gestures.Special Abilities
Linnet has been genetically modified to have bird wings. The feathers are pure white and her wingspan is twice her height. She also has lighter, hollow bones the same way birds do, so she weighs significantly less than she should. The downside to this is that she is much more prone to fractures and other related injuries. She can fly and is especially graceful in the air.
